The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4 door still looks a little awkward to us, no matter how fast and powerful it is. AMG says it is a four-door version of the AMG GT sports car and has been designed as a rival to the Porsche Panamera, but it really does look like a CLS with an identity crisis.
We first saw the car at the Geneva Motor Show back in March and weren’t sold on its looks. However, as time has passed, we’ve become slightly more accustomed to its curious shape, and these new images of the car cruising through Texas show that it can look quite nice in the right configuration.
The images in the gallery below were snapped during the vehicle’s press launch in Texas last week, which included a number of laps at the Circuit of the Americas. The AMG GT 4 door isn’t a track car by any means, but a circuit is the only place where it can be safely pushed to its limits.
A host of variants have so far been confirmed for production. The base model is the Mercedes-AMG GT 43 4MATIC+ 4-door Coupe (now that’s a mouthful…), fitted with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder that’s good for 362 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. This model can hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.9 seconds, but won’t be sold in the United States.
Next in the range is the AMG GT 53. It is powered by a 3.0-liter six-cylinder that delivers 429 hp and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque and is backed up by an electric motor delivering an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm).
The range-topping, and most desirable models in the range, are the GT 63 and GT 63 S. Both use a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 delivering 577 hp and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) in the regular 63 and 630 hp and 664 lb-ft (899 Nm) in the 63 S.
