The IKEA Group wants all of its home deliveries in cities such as Amsterdam, Los Angeles, New York, Paris and Shanghai to be made either by electric vehicles or other “zero-emissions means” by 2020.

The furniture retail giant’s ultimate goal is for all of its last-mile deliveries to be conducted by zero-emission vehicles, something they hope to accomplish before the year 2025.

Reaching this goal will be a very important step for the Swedish firm, especially after joining the EV100 back in 2017, a global initiative by The Climate Group aimed at businesses committed to the transition towards electric vehicles by 2030.

“We challenge ourselves and inspire others as we can only achieve the change that’s needed together,” stated IKEA CEO Jesper Brodin. “For us, it’s crucial to grow our business in a sustainable way – that’s why we’re speeding up the transition to EV in five inner city areas.”

Among the company’s targets is providing access to charging stations for EVs across all IKEA stores in 30 markets by 2020, as well as to halve relative emissions from co-workers and customers traveling to their stores by 2030.

“By switching to EVs for home deliveries at this pace, IKEA is setting a strong example for clean transport in city centers, where zero emissions zones will one day become the norm. They are enabling their customers to play a key part in accelerating the roll out of electric vehicles overall,” said The Climate Group CEO, Helen Clarkson.
