The development of the upcoming Ford Bronco is still ongoing and a new report now tells us that the off-roader will come with three pedals, at least in certain versions.
Jalopnik cites sources telling them that Ford wants Getrag to build a manual transmission -dubbed MT-88- for the new Bronco, one that will most likely be paired to the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 featuring seven gears.
If true, Ford will become one of the very few car makers that still offer a manual tranny in an SUV or truck. The move makes sense if the new Bronco is going to be positioned against the Jeep Wrangler, which also comes with three pedals in some models.
Getrag is currently building the MT-82 six-speed manual transmission for the Ford Mustang. This means that the new seven-speed ‘box could share a few components or even end up in the next generation Mustang as is.
The transmission company has been working on a new manual gearbox since 2015, code-named the 6/7MTI550. According to Getrag’s website, the new transmission is rated for 405lb-ft of torque and is capable for use in all-wheel drive applications.
If the 2020 Ford Bronco does indeed come with a seven-speed manual gearbox, it will also join a very small group of cars that currently offers the same amount of ratios and three pedals, including the Porsche 911 and the Chevrolet Corvette.
