We’ve become so accustomed to seeing the latest and greatest performance cars lapping the Nurburgring that it’s not even that interesting anymore. Seeing a car drifting around the daunting circuit, however, is.
Last month, successful drifter Vaughn Gittin Jr. took his Ford Mustang RTR Drift to the German circuit to complete a lap of the track. The only twist was that he would drift around every single corner.
Monster Energy has just dropped an extended cut version of Gittin Jr.’s unique Nurburgring lap, and for anyone who loves seeing cars go sideways and screaming V8 motors, it’s well worth a watch.
It’s worth noting that Gittin Jr. managed to slide around all the corners at insane speeds. He was also able to string together huge slides across multiple corners. Ford says that the drifter shredded three sets of tires during filming, so it’s reasonable to assume that the following clip was filmed in segments and not over one continuous lap.
We can’t help but be in awe of the man’s talent. Going fast at the Nordschleife without hitting anything is a feat in and of itself. Sliding around each and every corner of the treacherous ‘Green Hell’ doesn’t sound easy at all – so it’s little wonder why no one has done it in the past.
Vaughn Gittin Jr. had the perfect tool for the job. The professional racing driver hailing from Maryland has been competing in customized Mustangs for quite some time. His current Mustang RTR features a 7.1-liter Ford Performance engine built by Roush Yates that revs to 9000 rpm and pumps out more than 900 hp.
