GAC Motor may have displayed the GS5 SUV at the Paris Auto Show, but the Chinese car maker will most likely launch in the region with an electric vehicle first.
The timing of the launch is still uncertain, according to the company’s top management. The new GAC GS5 will go on sale in China at the end of this month but it’s not going to come in Europe anytime soon.
“We are studying how to enter the European market, and most likely it will be with an electric vehicle first,” GAC President Yu Jun told Automotive News in Paris.
So far, GAC Motor has expanded in 16 selected emerging markets, with the percentage of foreign sales being around 10 percent. GAC president said that their long-term goal is to have a 50-50 split in sales between China and abroad.
The Chinese car maker hasn’t still entered a more developed market such as Europe or the United States. When GAC came to the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, they said that they would launch the GS8 SUV by the end of 2019, but now Yu is saying that the current trade dispute between the US and China“might delay the launch of GAC’s first car in the U.S. to the first half of 2020.”
