The Veloster N is the Korean company’s first N-branded model in the U.S., and as such, it has the difficult task of introducing Hyundai’s take on the hot hatch segment.
On paper, the new Veloster N has everything it takes, starting with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine kicking out up to 275hp and 260lb-ft of torque, a short-throw six-speed manual with auto rev-matching and a chassis honed -where else?- at the Nurburgring.
The sportiest member of the Veloster family can be distinguished from the outside by the sportier body kit that includes unique bumpers, fatter side sills, dual exhaust outlets and up to 19-inch wheels. The interior has been similarly been spiced up with ‘Performance Blue’ accents, body-hugging seats, a unique steering wheel and shift knob, as well as numerous ‘N’ badges.
The powertrain is combined with an active exhaust system that provides a proper angry soundtrack in its sportiest setting. The manual gearbox features carbon-coated synchro rings and gear reinforcement for smoother operation and a more precise feel.
Hyundai says that the Veloster N’s front suspension is designed specifically to offer a sharper turn in and limit torque steer, while the electronically controlled dampers allow it to be more compliant in everyday driving.
