Of all the classic racing liveries we’ve seen come and go, the baby blue and orange Gulf scheme remains one of our favorites. And we’ve seen it applied to a wide array of vehicles, with or without the oil company’s blessing.
But while a Lamborghini Aventador may not seem like the most natural choice for the vintage-racer look, pouring over these images, we think it looks just perfect.
Now as you can probably tell just by looking at it, beneath the throwback livery, this is not a stock Lambo. It’s decked out with a Liberty Walk widebody aero kit, complete with riveted fenders, and a set of blacked-out Forgiato Dieci-ECL alloys.
Those add-ons all on their own give the Aventador an even racier look than standard. But to our eyes, the Gulf livery puts it over the top… in a good way. We could take or leave the extra decals, but we have to admit they do add to the air of competition appearance. And the black elements go well with the bright tones, if you ask us – even if Lamborghini isn’t one of the marques traditionally associated with Gulf’s signature color scheme.
It’s a treatment we’d sooner expect to see on, say, a Ford GT, a classic Porsche, or a competition-spec Aston Martin. Even a McLaren like the old F1 GTR, mixed in with Davidoff’s black and red. But it just goes to show that breaking with tradition, even on a traditional livery, can yield positive results. Wouldn’t you say?
