The new BMW 8-Series is marketed as a Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe fighter, and rightly so, but the upcoming 8-Series Gran Coupe is an altogether different story.

The 4-door version hasn’t yet entered production, but we guess the normal models will do battle against the new CLS, while the M Division-developed range topper should go after the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door.

The Merc family is so big that some of its models are treading on the feet of others (A-Class Sedan vs CLA, anyone?), though the automaker denies there’s any cross-shopping. Whatever the case, it definitely has the executive four-door coupe nicely covered, though it has refrained from offering such a version of the S-Class – which is what Giorgi Tedoradze did in this rendering.

The digital sketch borrows some of the design elements of both the CLS and AMG GT 4-door, mixing them with different shaped headlights, a Panamericana grille with ‘Mercedes’ lettering on top, and wide hips, among others.

The new grille with vertical slats has become the signature for the powerful and modern Mercedes-AMG vehicles. That would clash with the GT 4-door, though – but hey, it’s just a rendering, right?

Now, this is obviously just for kicks because, as we explained earlier, Mercedes-Benz doesn’t plan, nor need, a four-door coupe S-Class. Even so, its flagship is offered in saloon, coupe and convertible versions – and, of course, the Mercedes-Maybach for customers who want the ultimate in luxury.
