Renault hasn’t made up its mind yet on whether or not it will replace the Scenic and Grand Scenic MPVs with all-new models.

During an interview with Autocar, Renault boss Thierry Bollore admitted that the rising popularity of SUVs does threaten the prospects of the Scenic and Grand Scenic being updated early next decade.

“For the next generation, there is a question: do we just have SUVs, or do we continue to have MPVs? This questioning is ongoing.

“Today, we are happy with what we are doing with Scenic, but the segment is changing from year to year. For now, we are still fulfilling our customers’ needs,” Bollore said.

While MPVs like the Scenic and Grand Scenic were once hugely popular among families, SUVs have become the go-to vehicle for buyers looking for space, comfort, and practicality. They have also become somewhat of a status symbol for some buyers and are a more stylish alternative to MPVs.

According to Renault Europe boss Jean-Christophe Kugler, the current Scenic and Grand Scenic are still popular enough to not be axed anytime soon.

“Scenic customer loyalty levels are very high. We worked a lot with design, because [one of the reasons customers rejected] MPVs was often around design. Renault created the MPV market and so I think it helps having that leadership.”

However, there are alternatives to the Scenic and Grand Scenic in Renault’s own range, most notably the Captur, Kadjar, and Koleos SUVs. These three account for almost one-third of Renault’s global sales and may ultimately prove to be the way forward for the brand’s family haulers.
