Tesla owners may be all about innovation but as it turns out, some Model 3 customers have been asking for the carmaker to roll out an available key fob for the sedan. Tesla has done just that.
While the Tesla Model S and Model X both come with traditional key fobs as standard, the Model 3 doesn’t. Instead, owners are provided with a key card that simply needs to be tapped against the B-pillar for the car to unlock. The Model 3 has also been designed to work with an owner’s phone.
On the back of demand for a key fob, Tesla recently started introducing fobs to select Model 3 owners in its early access program, Electrek reports.
There’s nothing like having a physical key fob.
The Model 3 key fobs will be available from Tesla but it remains to be seen just how much they cost. Those who buy the fob will be easily able to sync it to the car through Tesla’s infotainment system and just like that, you’ll be able to drive around in a Model 3 and unlock it like a regular car.
Last week, Tesla actually expanded the range of available Model 3 variants with the release of the $45,000, mid-range model. Utilizing the same battery as the Long-Range Model 3 but with fewer cells, the mid-range Model 3 can travel 260 miles (418 km) on a single charge, reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.6 seconds and top out at 125 mph (201 km/h).
Despite the expansion of the Model 3 family, the entry-level, $35,000 variant promised to the world in early 2016 is still 4-6 months away.
