Tesla has stopped promoting and will soon stop selling its ‘Full Self-Driving’ option for its vehicles.
Responding to a question on Twitter, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk revealed that the option will temporarily only be available “off menu” after being dropped from the list of options for the Model 3, Model S, and Model X.
In the not too distant future, the Full Self-Driving option will be dropped entirely. According to Musk, the option was “causing too much confusion” for customers. The system won’t return until it is ready.
Tesla’s alterations to its self-driving ambitions are at odds with its promises over recent years that fully autonomous vehicles were just around the corner. As The Verge points out, Musk asserted three years ago that by 2017, the marque’s vehicles would be able to completely drive themselves without any human intervention.
The Full Self-Driving option had been advertised by Tesla as a $3000 add-on to the optional $5000 ‘Enhance Autopilot’ system. The option involved doubling the number of the vehicle’s cameras from four to eight which would apparently be enough to enable full self-driving in almost all circumstances when the necessary regulation changes were made.
“All you will need to do is get in and tell your car where to go. If you don’t say anything, the car will look at your calendar and take you there as the assumed destination or just home if nothing is on the calendar,” Tesla’s advertising stated.
Similar concerns have been raised about just how advanced Tesla’s self-driving functionality is in the past. For example, opinions have been split on the carmaker’s decision to actually dub the system ‘Autopilot‘, potentially confusing customers about the system’s actual self-driving potential.
