While the bigger BMW M5 has an all-wheel drive system (for the first time) paired exclusively to a torque-converter transmission, the next-gen M3 might go down a different route.
Quoting undisclosed sources with knowledge on the matter, BMWBlog reports that the upcoming premium compact sports sedan will get a manual transmission option, in addition to the mandatory dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
To make things even more exciting, another rumor claims that the car will arrive with both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive models. This is where things get a little blurry, because it’s unknown whether BMW M will launch two distinct versions of the next-gen M3, or if all of them will get the M-tuned specific xDrive with what could be a ‘tail-happy’ driving mode.

If BMW is indeed prepping two versions of its Mercedes-AMG C63 challenger, then it’s the rear-wheel drive model that will probably get the manual gearbox, whereas the xDrive derivative should make use of the automatic transmission solely.
It’s safe to say that until the German automaker steps forward and gives us something to work with in this direction, we’ll take this report with a grain of salt.
In addition to the four-door M3, BMW is apparently interested in rivaling the likes of the Audi RS4 Avant and Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate with a Touring version of the car. The super wagon will use the same engine as the sedan, which will reportedly be a twin-turbo 3.0-liter six-cylinder making up to 500 PS (492 hp / 368 kW).
