Volkswagen is celebrating 30 years of making camper vans with the introduction of a new special edition.

Aptly named the VW California 30 Years, the new special edition is limited to 999 units, out of which only 30 will be available in the United Kingdom. This makes it “the most exclusive special edition ever”, says the automaker.

The new camper van is based on the range-topping California Ocean, so it comes at a very hefty £64,307 ($81,945/€72,313) in the UK, tax included. For the money, customers will enjoy a lot of extra equipment, including a new color, Turmeric Yellow, contrasted by the Reflex Silver or Indium Grey finished roof and wing mirrors.

LED headlights, removable towbar and full LED headlights are offered at no extra cost, and are joined by the front and rear parking sensors and interior amenities such as the Discover Media Navigation Pro infotainment system. App-Connect, which allows users to access various apps through a compatible smartphone, including music and maps, heated front seats and cruise control are also standard.

Customers will have to choose between two versions of the 2.0 TDI diesel, with either 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) or 199 PS (196 hp / 146 kW). The sole transmission option is a seven-speed dual-clutch and the range-topping model, which starts at £70,629 ($90,001/€79,422), also gets all-wheel drive as standard.
