Six-wheel drive SUVs, whether official or modified, are the bomb these days. Not only they look different, but the increased traction enables them to cope with some arduous terrains.

However, they are far from affordable. So what can you do if you cannot afford the steep price/a>, yet still want one parked in your garage? Well, you can always get a donor car, some extra parts, and build it on your own.

This is exactly what a couple of Russian mechanics did, transforming a four-wheel drive Lada Niva into a six-wheel drive one. However, since they haven’t solved the torque transfer problem just yet, the car is technically 6×4, but they said that turning it into a 6×6 is not that hard.

After they chopped the body, and added the necessary parts, and made sure that there’s enough suspension travel and that the tires don’t hit the modified wheel arches, the two men took their project out for the initial test drive. And, despite the third axle not working properly yet, it did perform remarkably well, both on-road and going over some obstacles.

Hopefully, after they’ll turn it into a proper 6×6, they will take it on a longer drive and test its capabilities off-road. In the meantime, we can see how this project came to life, and how it drives.
