BMW has revived the popular 8-Series nameplate, reintroducing the German brand to the big two-door league and claiming to offer one of the sportiest GTs in the market.

The M850i xDrive uses the brand’s latest twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 523hp (530PS) and 553lb-ft (730Nm) of torque, which sends its power to all four wheels via an upgraded eight-speed automatic transmission.

The automaker claims a 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in just 3.7 seconds, with top speed being limited electronically to 155mph (250km/h).

In Europe, BMW is also offering a cheaper 840d xDrive, which is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six with 315hp (320PS) and 580lb-ft (680Nm) of peak torque. Like its V8 sibling, power is sent to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic. 0-62mph comes in 4.9 seconds while top speed is, again, limited to 155mph (250 km/h).

The interior comes packed with BMW’s latest technology, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment display as standard, running the company’s Operating System 7.0 and featuring pretty much every connectivity option available.

Despite not being able to disconnect the front axle like the BMW M5, the new 8-Series proves to be a pretty playful and entertaining big GT, offering impressive performance even in its base diesel form. The question though remains: is the new 8-Series worthy of its $110k+ price? Carfection investigates on the video linked below.
