The new year is upon us but it seems that for a number of police officers in Kentucky, a tragic loss of doughnut life is proving difficult to deal with.

You see, on New Year’s Eve, a truck hauling thousands of Krispy Kreme doughnuts caught fire in the city of Lexington. Everyone knows that police officers around the world absolutely love doughnuts (who doesn’t?) and images showing three officers tearing up at the sight of the toasted and charred treats have spread like wildfire.

At the time of writing, the tweet from the Lexington Police Department with the images had attracted more than 35,000 retweets and 123,000 likes. Messages of support have flooded in for those affected by the tragedy, including from the Toledo Police Department and the Stoughton Police Department.

No one deserves to witness something so sad.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve witnessed a horrific scene like this. In fact, tragedy struck in early May this year in Poland when a larger tanker truck crashed, spilling gallons of liquid chocolate across a major motorway. Local authorities were unable to save the chocolate and simply washed it away with warm water. In August 2017, a truck carrying hundreds of pizzas in Arkansas crashed, resulting in a similarly awful scene.

If there’s one positive to come out of this story it’s that the driver of the truck escaped uninjured and was able to celebrate the New Year. We imagine they did so while eating doughnuts and wiping away tears.
