The McLaren 720S has been one of the darlings of the drag strip, beating more high-end supercars that we can remember. In fact, one would need close to 1,000 horsepower to even think about engaging in a drag race against it.
To put it as simple as possible, to beat a 720S, one would need to become a 720S, and then some, as this video proved. In the meantime, the Woking-made machine has met another match, a special Porsche 944. The classic German sports car had its original gasoline engine swapped for an electric powertrain.

It boasts 980 horsepower (994 PS / 731 kW) and a staggering 1,500 pound-feet (2,034 Nm) of instant torque, in a car that weighs only 2,450 lbs (1,111 kg). Despite the insanely powerful zero-emission conversion, this 944 can do much more than beat the 720S, whose 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 pushes out 710 hp (720 PS / 530 kW) and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) of torque, as it’s said to be street legal.
That’s right, after humiliating a bunch of supercars at the drag strip, it can be driven home, if it has enough juice left in the batteries that is.
As a bonus run, the electric 944 was challenged by a tuned Mercedes-AMG GT R, and it’s easy to guess which one was quicker. So, without further ado, say hello to the 9-second Porsche, which runs on electricity and it’s not a Taycan.
