Reigning Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton will take delivery of a Mercedes-AMG One hypercar – but the mercurial driver also wants his employer to build an even more extreme variant.
Speaking with Top Gear, Hamilton said he’s expressed his interest in designing a special ‘LH Edition’ of the AMG One with Mercedes. It wouldn’t have to be a one-off either, as Hamilton would love to design a handful bound for the hands of customers.
“I want to do a special LH Edition. I’ve already spoken to them about it, and they’re considering it. It doesn’t make sense not to do it, considering we’ve won the world championship,” he said.
“I’d probably change the exhaust system, make it a bit louder. I’d naturally want to push Andy Cowell (head of Mercedes-AMG’s F1 powertrains) to give it a little bit more power. I’d probably change a few of the surfaces, add a little bit to the bodykit. I don’t know how much room they’d give me to do all of this, but I’d definitely do it,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton previously expressed his interest in designing a custom variant of the Mercedes-AMG GT R, but so far, we have no sign that something like this is going to happen.
If Hamilton gets his way on the AMG One, he could turn what shapes up to be a truly exceptional hypercar into something even more special. In standard guise, the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 is paired with four electric motors to deliver in excess of 1,000 PS (986 HP). This will allow the car to reach 124 mph (200 km/h) in under six seconds (!) and top out at more than 217 mph (350 km/h).
Now, even if Mercedes doesn’t cave in to its F1 superstar’s desire, there is one hypercar maker that probably will: Pagani. After all, the Italian company has already created both a one-off, LH-branded version of the Huayra for the five-time world champion as well as a special livery for its last Huayra Coupe inspired by Hamilton’s F1 car. And the Mercedes connection would still be there, as all Paganis are powered by AMG-sourced V12s.
