When it comes to combining performance with practicality, few automakers do it better than Porsche and while all of the company’s models offer decent luggage room, the company has decided to improve practicality further with the release of two roof boxes.

Available through the Tequipment accessories line, the sleek roof boxes are available in 320-liter (84 gallon) and 520-liter (137 gallon) configurations. The roof boxes easily mount to a set of roof racks on most modern Porsches and are shown here on a 911 Carrera 4 GTS, Macan, Cayenne, and Panamera.

As roof boxes go, these ones don’t look too bad even mounted to genuine sports car like the 911. The trend was arguably started by professional skier Jon Olsson, who has been fitting ski boxes to his supercars for the better part of a decade. Sometimes they can look pretty cool and obviously make any vehicle much more practical.

Porsche’s roof boxes were developed in-house by Porsche Design and adopt an intriguing shape that allows them to be opened and closed from either side. The roof boxes are also said to be easy to install and are positioned in such a way as to not get in the way of the vehicle’s main luggage compartment. The boxes are made from lightweight plastic and, in 520-liter form, weigh just 26 kg (57 lbs), while the 320-liter variation is only 18 kg (40 lbs).
