Even though not much is known about Chevrolet’s upcoming 2nd-gen Trax crossover, the automaker has already begun covering up prototypes and unleashing them out in public.
Compared to the current model, which received a mid-cycle update in 2016, this new Trax appears to be more aggressively-styled, with multiple body panels resembling those of the 2019 Blazer: see the “floating” A-pillar and rear door design.
A first actual look
Chevrolet sent out a teaser back in January, showcasing a brand new crossover which we had originally hypothesized could be previewing the Trax. However, that turned out to be the all-new 2020 Tracker for the Chinese market.
Moving on, we are curious to know how much Blazer tech will trickle down into its smaller sibling when it’s all said and done. So while we don’t expect to see Bowtie logo projection or an electronic locking glovebox, the all-new Trax should get Chevy’s latest infotainment system, with 4G LTE Wi-Fi and Apple Carplay and Android Auto, to go with improved active safety systems and higher quality materials inside.
A new platform
Reports indicate that the Trax will ditch the current model’s Gamma II platform in favor of a new Vehicle Set Strategy (VSS) architecture. Any new engines will remain small in displacement and hungry for petrol, like the 1.4-liter turbo Ecotec that powers the 2019 Trax – although an electrified option is always a possibility.
Chevrolet should unveil the 2020 Trax sometime this year, sending it out to battle the likes of the Jeep Renegade, Honda HR-V, Toyota C-HR, Mazda CX-3, Hyundai Kona and Nissan Kicks.
