A city bus ran a red light last week in Guelph, Ontario, Canada, and ended up t-boning a Tesla Model S.
Shortly afterwards, both the bus driver and the driver of the Tesla can be seen walking out of their vehicles, with several other people stopping to lend a helping hand. We also noticed how the Tesla activated its hazard lights almost instantly upon impact, with its electronic “brain” recognizing what had just happened.
The owner of the dashcam took to Reddit to confirm that nobody was injured, adding that the fire department arrived on the scene “almost immediately”, estimating that it probably took them about 3 minutes. As for the footage, he gave a copy of the video to both the police as well as to the driver of the Tesla, presumably for insurance purposes.
So why did this happen? The dashcam owner assumes the bus driver was simply not paying attention, agreeing with another redditor who said that he wasn’t even trying to stop. While that might be the case, if you look really close at precisely the 9-second mark, you can just make out the bus beginning to decelerate, which indicates that its driver did realize what was happening, though it turned out to be too little, too late.
Also, we’re pretty sure the weather conditions definitely didn’t help matters, as breaking distances increase considerably in snow and ice. But one must always be alert and adapt his speed to the road conditions, an advice this bus driver clearly didn’t heed.
