The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded the 2019 VW Jetta a maximum overall safety rating of five stars, following front, side and rollover collision tests.

The Jetta’s assortment of passive and active safety systems helped it secure the top rating, as it features six airbags and Automatic Post-Collision Braking System as standard on all trim levels. The latter system applies the brakes when a primary collision is detected by the airbag sensors.

Available driver-assistance features include Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Active Lane Keeping System (Lane Assist) and High Beam Control (Light Assist).

During testing, the Jetta performed admirably with regards to both Side Barrier and Pole impacts, netting five stars. The Rollover Resistance test was also aced, as the car presented a rollover risk of just 13.10%. As for the frontal crash, the test simulated a head-on collision between two similar vehicles, each moving at 35 mph (56 km/h). Despite a four out of five-star rating in frontal collision, the Jetta’s overall safety rating went all the way up to five stars.

“Volkswagen is delighted that the Jetta, our best-selling model, has earned the highest 5-star overall safety rating from the government—providing further validation that Volkswagen vehicles are among the safest vehicles in the industry,” stated VW of America sales and marketing exec, Derrick Hatami.

VW’s 2019 Jetta is priced from $18,745 in the USA, while the performance-oriented Jetta GLI starts at $25,995. The nameplate now joins the Atlas, Golf and Passat as 2019 Volkswagen models with maximum safety ratings.
