The Mercedes-AMG GT R Black Series is currently in testing phase, with reports citing a 2020 launch. However, it seems that the German firm has already started taking pre-orders for the car that marks the return of the iconic moniker.
In an Instagram post, an alleged GT R Black Series customer claims to have been told about the car’s output that’s supposed to be in excess of 700 HP. He also claims that production will commence in the third quarter of next year – and he attached the purchase form that’s dated April 23, 2019.
Although this looks legit, we obviously have no way of verifying its authenticity. If, however, it turns out to be real, then the GT R Black Series will gun for some of the most established supercars out there such as the Ferrari F8 Tributo and McLaren 720S, both of which have 710 hp – not to mention the 631 hp Lamborghini Huracan Evo.
In theory, modifying the GT R’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to develop 700+ hp seems very much doable. Right now, the most powerful iteration of this engine is found in the 630 hp (640 PS / 470 kW) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) unit of the GT 63 S 4-Door Coupe, which needs 3.2 seconds for the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/) sprint and maxes out at 196 mph (315 km/h). With a lower weight and other enhancements, the GT R Black Series will be quite a performer, even if it sticks to its four-door sibling’s output.
