The 2020 Toyota GR Supra was only unveiled at the start of the year and already, Gran Turismo Sport has been updated to not only include the new sports car, but also launch a dedicated, one-make online racing series for it.
Dubbed the ‘GR Supra GT Cup’, the online championship was previewed earlier this year, is exclusive to the popular PlayStation driving simulator and will kick off on April 27.
The championship will consist of 13 rounds at various racetracks around the world. Among the most noteworthy circuits are the Fuji International Speedway, Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Circuit de La Sarthe, the Nurburgring, Austria’s Red Bull Ring, Autodromo De Interlagos in Brazil and Australia’s Mount Panorama.
Races will usually be held one or two weeks apart, with a few exceptions. The final round will take place in late October at the Tokyo Motor Show, though the track where it will be held has yet to be announced.
The GR Supra GT Cup is open to anyone who has a copy of GranTurismo Sport and a PlayStation 4 console to play it on. Toyota hasn’t mentioned what the winner of the online championship will receive, but Gazoo Racing says that it will use the input of gamers to eventually enhance the road-going Supra.
In the United States, the all-new Supra is sold exclusively with a 3.0-liter inline-six delivering 335 hp and 368 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. This engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels and allows for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) sprint of 4.3 seconds.
