A 30-year-old woman who crashed into three cars near Stratford-upon-Avon in the UK with her Fiat Stilo, after drinking a bottle of wine, avoided jail time by a judge because of her gender.

The DUI motorist, Victoria Parry, was facing a possible prison sentence, but Judge Sarah Buckingham ruled that, “If Miss Parry was a man, there is no question it would have been straight down the stairs, because this is a shocking case of dangerous driving against a background of two previous convictions for excess alcohol.”

“But this offence was committed in May 2018 and she has not been in trouble since. She has clearly got an alcohol problem. She is, whether she admits it or not, an alcoholic.”

After hitting the three cars, Parry crashed into a ditch, where her Fiat Stilo burst into flames, according to The Telegraph. An off-duty police inspector pulled her from the wreck, that took place on May 23 last year.

“You richly deserve an immediate custodial sentence of 18 months,” said the judge. “I want to see whether you can really address the issues rather than paying lip service. If you succeed, I will not make the custody immediate. If you don’t comply, I will conclude that you are not worthy of the chance.”

Parry had been banned from driving for three years in 2015, after getting caught drunk behind the wheel for the second time. Two hours after her accident, she took a breath test at the police station and the results were just nearly three times UK’s legal limit.

The judge didn’t give any further reasoning as to why she would be spared for being a woman.
