Thinking about challenging a wicked-quick hot hatchback and a genuine sports car with your 5,500 lbs (2,500 kg) Mercedes-AMG G63? Turns out that the flagship G-Wagen is more than capable of holding its own in a straight line.
The first thing to consider is that it packs a heck of a lot more power than something like a Porsche Cayman GTS or an Audi RS3, which is logical given its weight and price – it costs more than twice as much as the Porsche and more than three times as much as the Audi.
Here’s how they compare in terms of power output: The G63’s 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine produces 577 HP (585 PS) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque, which allow for a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) acceleration time of just 4.5 seconds.
Next in line power-wise is the Audi RS3, featuring a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine with 394 HP (400 PS) and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque. It can sprint to 62 mph in 4.1 seconds and like the G63, it too has all-wheel drive.
Last but not least is the Porsche Cayman GTS, powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-pot, producing 360 HP (365 PS) and 317 lb-ft (420 Nm) of torque. The Cayman can also hit 62 mph in 4.1 seconds, as long as you get the PDK version instead of the 6-speed manual, in which case it’ll need 4.6 seconds.
This drag race was organized by Top Gear and sees Rory Reid getting behind the wheel of the G63 in an attempt to outrun the RS3 and the Cayman. He actually does really well to get off the line forcefully, as for what happens next, you know where to click to find out.
