Dwayne Johnson won’t be starring in Fast & Furious 9, but Vin Diesel has confirmed that another former wrestling superstar will have a role in the new film. That man is John Cena.

Diesel made the announcement during a recent video he posted on Instagram. It remains to be seen what character Cena will portray, whether or not he will be a protagonist or antagonist, and how significant his role will be.

“Guys, as you know, I’m always thinking fast, and thinking about the responsibility of making something iconic and deserving of your loyalty,” Diesel said in the video. “I know this sounds crazy, but every blue moon I feel like Pablo [Paul Walker] up there sends me someone. Another soldier in the fight for truth. Today, someone came by Toretto Gym that speaks to what Pablo would have brought.”

While Cena’s filmography isn’t as long and illustrious as Johnson’s, he has been slowly progressing away from his wrestling career and focusing on his acting. In 2018, he starred as Agent Jack Burns in Bumblebee and also voices Yoshi in the upcoming film The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle.

Fast & Furious 9 is set to be directed by Justin Lin, the man behind the third, fourth, fifth and sixth films in the popular franchise.

The ninth installment in the franchise was originally penciled in to premiere on April 19th, 2019, but in late 2017, it was announced that the film had been pushed back until April 10th, 2020 due to the “Hobbs and Shaw” spin-off starring Johnson and Jason Statham.
