With an official unveiling set for May 27 at a standalone event, BMW found it appropriate to allow people to check out their new 1-Series up close and personal, without actually revealing too much about it.
However, this video filmed in France provides us with not only a good look at the new 1-Series’ front and rear light units, but also its interior – more specifically, the backseat, which offers considerably more legroom than before thanks to the car’s front-wheel drive architecture.
A completely new design
The 2020 1-Series doesn’t have much in common with its predecessor when it comes to design. The front and rear fascia are new, the grille is bigger, the hood is new, the creases in the bodywork are different and of course, overall practicality has improved.
Coincidentally, this is the exact same car that BMW France showed off recently on social media, which means we’ve already seen what the taillight graphics look like – something we had been looking forward to for a while now. As for which version this is, according to the video it’s the 118i Sportline, powered by a 140 PS (138 HP) 3-cylinder unit.

The part we found most interesting was the one where the reviewer sits down behind the driver’s seat of the new 1-Series, showing us just how much knee room he had with the seat set up for his driving position. Also, if you don’t speak French, just click on the subtitle button because there is an English translation encoded.
One thing we’ve yet to see is the trunk, although considering its new platform, this third-gen 1-Series should also improve on its predecessor in the luggage department.
Following its unveiling later this month, the all-new 2020 BMW 1-Series hatchback is expected to make its official public debut later this year at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show.
