In the eyes of some hardcore enthusiasts, cars like the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4Matic+ are considered half-baked or even unnecessary. Whether you agree with them or not, this video does show that the lower performance grade of the CLS AMG series is capable of some pretty fast speeds.
Sitting beneath the skin of the CLS 53 4Matic+ is a 3.0-liter straight-six turbocharged engine which is mated to an EQ Boost starter alternator powering a 48-volt electric system. While the engine’s turbocharger is relatively traditional, it does include an electric compressor that eliminates turbo lag. All up, the car pumps out 435 hp and 383 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque.

Power is sent through a nine-speed automatic transmission and, as the model’s name implies, grunt is transmitted to the pavement through all four wheels. Mercedes-AMG says the CLS 53 can sprint to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.5 seconds and continue through to a limited 167 mph (270 km/h) top speed with the extra AMG Driver’s package, or 155mph (250km/h) without it
This clip shows the car sprinting off the line and it does hit 100 km/h in exactly 4.5 seconds. Once the speedo reaches triple digits, the acceleration starts to dip but the car is still able to accelerate through to 200 km/h at a respectable rate. An in-car app used by AutoTopNL recorded a quarter mile time of 12.62 seconds.
Sure, the CLS 53 4Matic+ isn’t going to break any records or throw you back in your seat with its acceleration, but it’s definitely brisk enough for most folks out there.
