A new version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE is coming to the United States, reportedly dubbed the GLE 580.
While recently at a Mercedes-Benz dealership in the U.S., Car Buzz was shown an order sheet for the new GLE. On that sheet was a yet-to-be-seen model dubbed the GLE 580. The automaker hasn’t even announced such a model, and yet there it was listed on an order sheet for the SUV. Interesting, to say the least.
Based on the name of the model, it is easy to come to one likely conclusion: it will be powered by a mild-hybrid V8. Why? Well, the new GLS was unveiled at last month’s New York Auto Show in 580 guise. This is the first time this badge has been used on a Mercedes-Benz model and the big SUV is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 joined by a 48-volt EQ Boost mild hybrid system. This powertrain pumps out a total of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque.

Unfortunately, the order sheet in question didn’t provide any powertrain details about the forthcoming GLE 580, but the listing means it can’t be that far away from being officially announced and hitting the assembly line.
The regular 2020 GLE range is topped out by the 450 model that’s outfitted with a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six with a 48-volt EQ Boost, for a total of 362 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. Mercedes-AMG is hard at work developing a new GLE 63 model with its flagship 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 putting out approximately 600 hp, while in February, unveiled the mid-range GLE 53 complete with 429 hp. Consequently, there is certainly room in the GLE family to support a second V8 model with a touch under 500 hp.
We have already reached out to Mercedes-Benz about the issue, and will update this article as soon as we get a response.
