Putting a Porsche in your driveway just got a lot easier as the company has launched a new augmented reality configurator.

Available on Android and iOS devices, the Porsche Augmented Reality Visualizer app allows users to configure their ideal sports car and then “virtually place the configured vehicle on any surface – both inside rooms as well as outdoors.”

Besides the standard configurator functions, the app has a “highlight function” that allows users to view technical details that are usually hidden from view. In particular, the app’s x-ray mode allows people to explore the engine, suspension and drivetrain.

The app is relatively limited at the moment, but it allows users to configure the new 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S. Users can also explore the Mission E concept, but that particular model will be replaced by the Taycan when the car introduced this fall. Additional models will be added to the app in the coming months and Porsche says their entire lineup should be available for configuration by the end of the year.

According to Porsche’s director of marketing communications, Oliver Hoffmann, “Now, before making the purchase decision, everyone can virtually park their dream Porsche in their own driveway, marvel at it in their own living room, or show a photo-realistic version to their friends.”

The app is an interesting and it’s Porsche’s latest venture using augmented reality. Two years ago, the company began equipping dealership employees with smart glasses running Tech Live Look software. More recently, the company made a strategic investment in WayRay which specializes in holographic augmented reality head-up display technologies.
