Tesla is preparing to make some kind of announcement this coming Friday in China and has already began teasing us with a first image.
The teaser, first picked up by the guys over at Electrek, was shared on the car manufacturer’s Weibo social media account and includes the date ‘2019.05.31’, plus a blurry image of… what, exactly? It’s difficult to tell what this is, never mind what Tesla is teasing here, but there are a few possibilities.
The first is a special edition of either the Model 3, Model S, or Model X for the Chinese market. Such a vehicle could come with unique exterior and interior trim to appeal to local customers. It’s something that’s been adopted long ago by numerous manufacturers, who have found a nice way to make a few quick extra bucks in the world’s largest car market.

However, we’re inclined to believe that what Tesla is teasing here has something to do with its upcoming Gigafactory in Shanghai. Construction at the site kicked off in January, and a video from earlier this month shows that impressive progress has been made. In fact, it appears as though the majority of the site’s exterior has been built and Tesla could actually be on track to commence production of cars at the facility as early as September. So, could they be preparing to make an important announcement about their local plant on Friday?
Whatever the case may be, we only have a few days until we find out.
Tesla is currently embarking on a significant expansion throughout China and intends on producing base versions of the Model 3 and Model Y locally. The Shanghai Gigafactory is expected to be capable of building up to 500,000 vehicles per year, which should cater to the local market and avoid any tariff wars between China and the U.S.
