Renaultsport took the time to develop the all-new Megane RS Trophy-R, and their bet has paid off. This is the fastest front-wheel drive production car to have ever lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife and the top dog in the French company’s lineup.
Slotting above the Megane RS and Megane RS Trophy, the Trophy-R features several aerodynamic enhancements and is 130 kg (286 lbs) lighter compared the mid-range model. Power, however, is the same, with the 1.8-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder that’s shared with the Alpine A110 producing 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW).
The new Megane RS Trophy-R hasn’t been developed solely with the Nurburgring in mind. Thus, it’s pretty darn fast on any track, including the Circuit de Monaco, where it was recently put through its paces by Renault’s Formula 1 drivers.
Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo drove the front-wheel drive, hot hatch on the racetrack, pushing the heck out of it. AutoTopNL had the chance to ride shotgun with Hulkenberg and recorded the whole experience for web surfers to see, so if you wanted to get a closer look at the impressive car, then you have come to the right place.
Unfortunately, since the uploader didn’t get the chance to drive the latest Megane RS Trophy-R, we didn’t get any real feedback, but the first reviews should be out soon, and only then we’ll find out how much the next generations Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic Type R have to worry.
