Buying a new BMW M3 requires a quite healthy bank balance, but this used, older example is an excellent way to get into the M family.

The E46-generation has long been one of the most desirable M3 iterations and is universally praised for its handling and powertrain. Depending on where you live, finding examples in good condition can be quite difficult, but this car located in Costa Mesa, California looks to have a lot going for it.

The Bring A Trailer listing reveals that the car was purchased new at Riverside BMW in southern California and passed through three owners before the selling dealer picked it up in 2018. An Imola Red paint scheme makes it stand out from most other E46 M3s and a set of H&R lowering springs add to the aggression. Silver 19-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires (from 2005, so they’ll have to be replaced) complete the look.

Inside, it sports heated black leather seats with driver-side memory settings, a Harman Kardon audio system, auto-dimming mirror and, most importantly, a six-speed manual transmission. A glance at the odometer reveals that there are 37,874 miles (60,952 km) on the clock.

Powering the M3 E46 is a 3.2-liter naturally-aspirated inline-six pumping out 333 hp and 262 lb-ft (355 Nm) of torque when new. Not only does this engine produce an iconic howl, but it also revs all the way to 7,900 rpm.

Sure, the two models that followed were much more powerful and faster, but this one is, by common consensus, the purest of them all. The good news is that it’s offered with no reserve and the highest bid is, right now, just $10k. The bad news, that there’s still six days ’till the auction ends, so there’s not a chance in the world that this price won’t get much, much higher…
