The 8-Series lineup is growing as BMW has announced the 840i Coupe and Convertible will arrive in the United States later this year.
Set to slot underneath the M850i, the 840i is equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS) and 368 lb-ft (499 Nm) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system.
In terms of performance, the 2020 BMW 840i Coupe can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 4.7 seconds while the all-wheel drive variant can accomplish the same task in 4.4 seconds. Likewise, the 840i Convertible can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 5.0 seconds while the all-wheel drive model cuts that time to 4.6 seconds. Both cars have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h) when equipped with all-season tires, but that climbs to 155 mph (250 km/h) with performance tires.
Other performance features include steering wheel mounted paddle shifters, launch control and an M Sport differential on rear-wheel drive variants. There’s also Dynamic Damper Control and an Integral Active Steering system which is standard on all-wheel variants.
The models follow in the footsteps of the M850i, but are a tad less aggressive. They feature a revised front bumper and LED headlights with LaserLight technology. The models also have a dual exhaust system and standard 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, drivers will find a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment system. Other highlights include Vernasca leather sport seats, ambient lighting and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. The model also has a head-up display, a wireless smartphone charger and soft-close automatic doors. Rounding out the highlights are a heated steering wheel, heated front seats and an instrument panel finished in Nappa leather.
An assortment of options will be available including extended Merino leather, glass controls and a Bowers & Wilkins diamond surround sound system. There will also be a Comfort Seating Package which adds ventilated multi-function front seats and a neck warmer (on the 840i Convertible).
