We already knew that a new version of the Ford GT was coming at Goodwood – and this is it: the Mk2, an enhanced version of the racer that cannot be driven on public roads – nor any existing series, for that matter.
The Blue Oval is asking $1.2 million (€1.063 million at current exchange rates) for each of the 45 units it will put together. In return for spending the 7-digit sum, customers get the track-only supercar that’s been developed by Ford Performance and its engineering partner Multimatic with aerodynamic upgrades and more power.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 has been tuned to deliver 700 horsepower. That’s 200 hp more than the racer that is constrained by racing regulations, and makes the Mk2 the most powerful version of the GT yet. The unit is paired to the same 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission, albeit with a few changes to cope with the extra output.
Engine cooling has been enhanced by the addition of the air-to-air outboard mounted charge air cooler with water spray technology, which sprays water in high temperature situations, while the auxiliary engine, clutch and transmission coolers are fed fresh air by is the roof-mounted scoop. Stopping power has been improved as well with the addition of the carbon ceramic brakes from the street car. The vehicle rides on 19-inch, forged aluminum wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport GT tires.
The visual enhancements have a more important role than telling the average track-day enthusiast that this is a more special version of the supercar. The new front splitter, diffuser, fender louvres, dive planes and large rear wing allow the Mk2 to generate 400 percent (!) more downforce than the street-legal GT. Furthermore, the race-proven suspension, which ditches the adjustable ride height and drive modes, providing it with weight savings of more than 90 kg (198 lbs) and allows it to pull more than 2Gs of lateral grip.
Keeping the driver strapped in is the Sparco racing seat and six-point racing harness, while vital information is provided by the MoTeC system, which doubles as a display for the reversing camera. If the owner so wishes, a passenger seat can be added as an option.
The GT Mk2 starts life in Markham, Ontario, alongside the street-legal version, and is then shipped to Multimatic, where it’s crafted into this track-only weapon.
