Engineering specialist HWA AG has become the latest team to join Extreme E, an all-electric SUV off-road racing series whose inaugural season will kick off in 2021.
This decision will result in the rekindling of an old rivalry between HWA and long-time DTM rival ABT Sportsline, the latter having recently thrown their hat in the ring for Extreme E too.
Currently, HWA is active in Formula E, but prior to that it tallied a number of titles and race wins in DTM. The German firm is also a major backer of customers in multiple top-tier GT and open-wheel series.
“We are looking forward to Extreme E. This is an even bigger adventure for us than when we joined Formula E last year. However, I am confident that we will again be able to demonstrate our 360° motorsport expertise in the extreme conditions we will face in the new series,” said HWA CEO, Ulrich Fritz.

“We are impressed by the concept and the people behind the series. We have got to know them in Formula E and have worked very well with them. The Extreme E project is a great opportunity – for us as HWA, for the technological shift towards more E-mobility, and for a more conscious approach to the environment and finite resources.”
The extreme conditions referred to by Fritz will come courtesy of the Himalayas, the Arctic, Amazon Rainforest, Sahara Desert and an Indian Ocean Island – all of which have suffered at the hands of climate change or human interference.
