The Honda Civic Type R’s records set at different tracks all over the world have started falling at the hands of the new Renault Megane RS Trophy-R.
The French hot hatch is the fastest front-wheel drive production car at the Nurburgring, and has set a new record at Spa-Francorchamps, as well, during the R.S. Days. Renaultsport’s test driver Laurent Hurgon completed the lap in 2:48.338, more than 5 seconds quicker than the Civic Type R.

“I am, once again, really proud and delighted. Spa-Francorchamps is one of the favorite European circuits for drivers. It is very fast and complex, and the car is perfect for this configuration”, said Hurgon, who also set the record in the Megane RS Trophy-R at the Nurburgring earlier this year. “The work done on the aerodynamic balance proved its value. The sensation in the Raidillon, Pouhon and Blanchimont corners was really excellent. What a pleasure!”
Like the Megane RS Trophy, the record-breaker uses the 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW), 1.8-liter turbocharged engine. However, it’s more aerodynamic while also weighing 130 kg (286 lbs) less. For the development of the car, Renaultsport worked together with Akrapovic, Brembo, Bridgestone, Ohlins and Sabelt, for the exhaust system, brakes, tires, shock absorbers and bucket seats, respectively.
To maintain exclusivity of the Megane RS Trophy-R, Renaultsport has put a production cap, announcing that it will only make 500 units. It will launch before the end of the year and will start at €55,000 ($61,447) in France, €10,700 ($11,954) more than the Megane RS Trophy, and €16,700 ($18,658) more than the regular Megane RS.
