There’s countless transportation related emojis, but Electrify America is gearing up for World Emoji Day by proposing the first emoji for electric vehicles.

Showing a generic sedan at a charging station, the proposed emoji has been submitted to the Unicode Consortium which is the governing body that oversees emoji creation. It’s officially called “Electric Vehicle With Charger” and Electrify America hopes it will join the list of 230 emojis which have been added this year alone.

Electrify America says there’s a need for a charging emoji as sales of electric vehicles are expected to rise to 10 million units annually by 2025. The company also noted recently studies have suggested that more than 40 million Americans would consider making their next vehicle fully electric. As they explained, “electric vehicle ownership is destined to become the norm in the coming years.”

According to Electrify America’s Rich Steinberg, “We hope an emoji, a symbol used in everyday digital communication, will help more people get used to the idea of driving an EV and become excited about the possibility of owning one someday.” He added, “As EVs become more popular and charging station networks continue to expand, we felt it was time for an emoji that reflects the changing industry and future of transportation.”

As part of their campaign to make the emoji official, Electrify America has launched a Change.org petition calling on fans to support them. However, as of right now, just 40 people have signed it.

While Electrify America has high hopes for the emoji, it’s not hard to see how it could end up backfiring. People have plenty of time to kill while recharging their electric vehicle, so the emoji could effectively highlight one of the worst attributes about them.
