In the constant chase of filling almost every major segment, Volvo wouldn’t say no to a larger SUV to sit above the XC90.
A rival to the likes of the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS, the vehicle was hinted at by Hakan Samuelsson. The CEO told AutoExpress that a flagship SUV is under consideration.
“We are not excluding the idea of additions, especially in very core segments like the SUV”, said Samuelsson. “I think we are looking into this possibility right now. You should not exclude the idea that there might be a bigger one, but maybe also a smaller one. We will surprise you about that in the future.”

The small SUV, which would sit under the X1-rivaling XC40, was already hinted at months ago by the company’s head honcho. At the time, he told the British publication “never say never” when asked about the potential addition of a smaller range of cars.
While an official decision is still pending, it’s thought that the rumored sub-40 family might get battery-electric power. Volvo is also considering expanding the charging infrastructure, because “when somebody has an electric car, they need a good concept on how to charge them”, Samuelsson admitted.
Before coming to an outcome, the Swedish auto firm will likely expand the new 40 range, which currently includes the XC40 premium subcompact SUV. And they will do so with the successor of the V40 which, according to a previous report, could become more of a crossover than an Audi A3 Sportback, BMW 1-Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class rivalling hatchback.
