The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray starts at a bargain $59,995 but Motor Trend understands the mid-engined supercar will be hit with a price hike for the 2021 model year.

Citing an unnamed but allegedly “well-placed source,” Motor Trend says that pricing for the C8 Corvette will only start at below $60,000 for the car’s first model year. That’s certainly a shame but not particularly surprising when you consider how Chevrolet incrementally increased the price of the C7 Corvette after it was introduced.

The Chevrolet C7 Corvette hit the market with a $51,995 starting price and just a few months after launching, that figure jumped to $53,995 and by the time the 2015 model year came around, the car’s entry price was sitting at $55,995. Much to Chevrolet’s credit, that starting price remained consistent from 2015 through to the C7’s final model year of 2019.

It is unclear by how much Chevrolet will jack up the price for the 2021 Corvette Stingray but buyers shouldn’t be surprised to see a price rise by around the $2000-$3000 mark. This is hardly the end of the world.

Nobody expected the C8 Corvette to start at under $60,000. This is the reason why those in attendance at the car’s global premiere in mid-July audibly gasped when Chevrolet announced the car’s sub-$60k starting price as most enthusiasts and publications believed a figure nearer the $70,000 mark was likely. Heck, Chevrolet could increase the price of the new Corvette to $100,000 and it would still represent quite good value compared to its European mid-engined rivals.
