Car manufacturers routinely patent the intriguing ideas they have and Ford has done just that for a movie projector system incorporated into the tailgate of an SUV.
The patents, picked up by The Drive, were originally filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in April 2017 and depict a small projector which could be used to show movies and TV shows, perfect if you’re out camping in the wilderness in need of some entertainment.
The patent describes a “liftgate… and a video projector mounted to the liftgate. Further, the video projector is configured to project video in a direction away from the vehicle when the liftgate is in the open position.”

The projector could also double as a floodlight making it all the more versatile but we imagine that whatever it is used for, it would drain a vehicle’s battery very quickly.
It’s an intriguing idea but we’re not convinced there would be much demand for such a system, namely because most current SUV buyers would never find themselves anywhere other than built-up urban environments with cinemas only a short drive away.
In a statement, a Ford spokesperson said the filing of the patents didn’t mean the company would release such a system.
“We submit patents on new inventions as a normal course of business but they aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans.”
Of more interest in the world of Ford patents was the emergence of images showing a new Ford off-roader, most likely the new Bronco, complete with removable doors a couple of days ago. Now, that’s something we can get behind.
