FIA World Rallycross Champion, two-time DTM champion and three-time winner of the Race of Champions, Mattias Ekström, is set to be a Cupra e-Racer official driver.
In addition, the Swede will be in attendance at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, where he will also be unveiled as an e-ambassador for the brand, joining the team leading Cupra’s electric racing strategy.
With more than 25 years of racing experience under his belt in different touring, rally and karting competitions, Mattias Ekström is widely regarded as one of the most versatile drivers in the world. His expertise will no doubt benefit the Cupra e-Racer’s testing as well as the development of forthcoming electric racing vehicles.
“Joining Cupra is a natural move for me. After a career dedicated to the racing world where I had explored all combustion engine formats I wanted to transition to electric racing with Cupra, which has been a pathfinder in this segment since its creation”, said Mattias Ekström, the new Cupra e-ambassador.
Last year, Cupra unveiled the world’s first 100-percent electric touring racing car, the Cupra e-Racer. Delivering 300 kW (408 PS / 402 hp) of continuous power and up to 500 kW (680 PS / 671 hp) at its peak, the e-Racer is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 3.2 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in only 8.2 seconds. Its top speed is estimated at 270 km/h (168 mph).
According to Cupra, the e-Racer is just a prelude of the brand’s technological capabilities. “Electric propulsion is going to be at the core of Cupra’s racing strategy. We will leverage on Mattias’ racing experience and innovation skills to reinvent the future of racing and develop new experiences around global motorsport”, said Antonino Labate, Cupra director of Strategy, Business Development and Operations.
