If you live in the U.S. and are looking to buy a McLaren 720S Coupe or a Spider anytime soon, you can now get it along with the MSO Defined carbon fiber active rear spoiler as a post-production optional extra.
The spoiler, which costs $9,717.07 (previously available as a factory option only), features a two year warranty and can be matched to other existing visual carbon fiber exterior elements, like those from the Exterior Carbon Fiber Packs.
“As pioneers of carbon fibre use in the automotive industry dating back to 1981, carbon fibre is a core part of McLaren’s DNA and has been found in every road car we’ve produced since 1994,” said Tony Joseph, McLaren North America president.
“In addition to the carbon fibre chassis, which is the heart of all McLaren sports and supercars, carbon fibre can be utilized in other areas as well. Visual carbon fibre not only looks great, but can offer weight savings, which is very important to many McLaren customers and automotive enthusiasts.”
The previously-mentioned carbon packs can dress up your hood air intakes, rear fender air intakes, door mirror casings, front splitter, rear bumper, front air intake and even the roof – any of which should work great visually alongside the carbon active rear spoiler.

As for how the wing works, it is hydraulically operated and can also act as an airbrake. It features three main operational positions: Driver downforce (70%-80% wing deployment), DRS (30% wing deployment) and High Speed Braking (100% airbrake deployment in less than 0.5 seconds).
In the latter scenario, the wing can shift aero-balance by 20% in order to improve high speed braking stability and overall braking distances.
