It doesn’t take a genius to understand what you’re meant to do when you come across a ‘Stop’ sign behind the wheel: you’re supposed to stop – no “ifs” or “buts”.
Nevertheless, people frequently run stop signs all around the world, and one motorist’s decision to do just that almost triggered a head-on collision in Orange County, California recently. The whole thing was captured on dashcam and is well worth a watch, particularly because of the cammer’s reaction to the near-miss.

The clip, shared on Streamable, provides a view outside the vehicle while also showing those inside, including a couple, their young child, and a dog. As the family drives along the road, a black sedan comes into view in the distance after running a stop sign and driving directly into their path.
Fortunately, both drivers brake just in time to avoid a collision and the driver with the dashcam doesn’t waste any time in ensuring the video is saved. He says ‘Okay Presto’ which, on the Owlcam, a popular dashcam available online, automatically saves the clip. He then proceeds to say ‘Absolute idiot’, which is the file name he chose to save the footage under.
It’s difficult to say whether the driver who ran the stop sign did so on accident or if they thought they could make it through the intersection before the cammer. Whatever the case may be, we hope they have learned a lesson by this near miss and don’t do it again, or they might not be that lucky…
