A stunning silver McLaren F1 LM-Spec has sold for a record $19,805,000 at RM Sotheby’s Monterey Car Week auctions last weekend.
There are only two McLaren F1s in the world that have been outfitted with the High Downforce Kit and LM-spec engine. The other example, painted red, was auctioned off for $13.75 million some four years ago at RM Sotheby’s 2015 auction, also at Monterey. When the gavel dropped at $19,805,000, this silver example set a new auction record for a McLaren.

The car originally left Woking painted Midnight Blue with a black interior. When it was acquired by its second owner, however, it was sent back to the factory where it received the LM-spec modifications that saw the BMW-sourced 6.1-liter V12 bumped up to 680 HP thanks to a higher redline and other alterations including such as additional radiators, a transmission cooler and a modified exhaust.
Then come the exterior modifications. Included with the High Downforce Kit are 18-inch GTR wheels, a towering rear wing, a bespoke rear diffuser, louvers on the front wheel arches and an extended front splitter that, according to McLaren’s own estimates, give it more downforce than the Le Mans-winning 1995 F1 GTR race car.
Some interior changes were also made when the car was sent back to the UK for its upgrades. For example, the cabin was re-trimmed in cream leather and beige and brown Alcantara. The car, chassis #018, has 21,500 km (13,352 miles) on the clock and, while it’s extremely expensive, it’s quite possibly that it shall continue to appreciate in the coming decades.
