Suzuki Drops India-Made Celerio And Baleno From Britain, Is Europe Next?

Suzuki’s cheapest models on the UK market, the Celerio city car and Baleno supermini, will no longer be available to buy after the end of August.

While a limited number of ex-demonstrator cars are still available, the supply of new, unregistered cars will be cut off.

A company spokesman told British media the Japanese automaker is “refocusing its model range to cater for the high popularity of its best-selling UK models.” The models he was referring to are the Ignis city car, Swift supermini, S-Cross crossover, and Vitara SUV.

“This has resulted in sales of Celerio and Baleno being discontinued for the UK only. Suzuki is also preparing its range for future emission regulations in 2020, of which details will be confirmed and announced in the future,” the representative added.

The India-made Celerio city car and Baleno supermini launched in 2015 and 2016, respectively but haven’t been successful products for Suzuki in Europe. The company sold around 15,000 Balenos and 21,000 Celerios in the region in 2018 while most rivals did better.

During the same period, other similarly sized cars from Suzuki’s lineup sold much better than the Baleno and Celerio. The carmaker delivered around 55,000 Swift superminis and 43,000 Ignis city cars in 2018 in Europe.

The Celerio is still listed on Suzuki’s UK website with a starting price of £8,999 (approximately $11,050). That makes it Suzuki’s cheapest new car in Britain and £2,850 more affordable than the Ignis which has a similar footprint. The Baleno is priced from £9,999, making it £2,500 cheaper than the similarly sized Swift.
