The M2 Competition is one of the most entertaining cars on the market right now, and relies solely on an internal combustion engine for its prowess. However, even M cars can’t escape the constantly tightening emission regs and various restrictions around the globe, and electrification is one way to get around those issues.

It is widely reported that BMW’s M division is in the process of developing a range-topping M2 CS that will be limited in production and both faster and lighter than the Competition. However, the CS isn’t the only derivative Munich is planning for its popular sports coupe, with Automobile Magazine claiming that a “partly electrified M2” is around the corner.

No details about this model are offered; according to BMW Blog, though, the M2 will turn into a full-blown plug-in hybrid but will rather adopt 48V mild-hybrid tech and electric turbochargers. Such a powertrain could provide the sports car with a small amount of all-electric range while also boosting horsepower and torque and improving fuel efficiency.

It remains unclear when the hybridized M2 in question will launch but 2022 is a possibility. If that’s the case, the hybrid M2 could be the final iteration of the first-generation model before the new 2-Series Coupe launches and, along with it, the new M2. Whatever the case may be, it’s obvious that BMW is remaining committed to its entry-level M car – and that’s good news for petrolheads.

Anyhow, those looking to buy a hardcore M2 might want to put their name down for the upcoming CS. Tipped to launch at the LA Auto Show, it will be powered by the S55 twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six and reportedly pump out 444 HP, while production will, allegedly, be limited to just 2,200 units.
