BMW Motorrad could up-heave its nomenclature to more closely mimic the branding of the group’s high-performance M cars, Ride Apart reports.
Recent trademark applications filed by BMW with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) reveal the German brand has secured the rights to the names ‘M 1000 RR’, ‘M 1300 GS’, and ‘M 1000 XR.’ Those familiar with BMW’s current family of motorcycles will know of the current S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR models.
It is unclear if this new naming structure means BMW will replace the S 1000 RR and XR models with M 1000 RR and M 1000 XR models or if instead the ‘M’ in the name will be used in reference to higher-performance variations as they are in BMW’s car division.

As for the M 1300 GS model mentioned in the trademarks, it is even more mysterious as BMW Motorrad doesn’t currently produce a 1300 cc GS model. It is claimed that the model referenced could be a more powerful version of the current R 1250 GS.
BMW first started experimenting with the ‘M’ nomenclature on its motorcycles late last year when it revealed the latest-generation S 1000 RR could be equipped with M options and M Performance parts. Evidently, BMW seems keen ensure its high-performance bikes are closely associated with the M division.
As always, there is no guarantee the aforementioned new names will make their way into the production but we suspect they will.
