It’s Official: Fiat Kills The 500 Hatch In North America

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has confirmed the end of production of the current generation 500 and 500e models for North America.

The car maker adds that the current inventory of 2019 500 and 500e will last into 2020, should you want to buy one. Fiat’s North American presence is now limited to the 500L, 500X and 124 Spider.

Sales of the 500 took a nosedive in recent years, with Fiat managing to shift just 5,370 units in 2018 compared to the 43,772 units sold in 2012. 2019 isn’t looking good either, as FCA moved just 1,692 examples through June.

The US-spec Fiat 500 is offered with the company’s 1.4-liter MultiAir turbocharged four that produces 135 HP and 150 lb-ft (203 Nm) of torque and is paired to either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The more powerful Abarth version also uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter, only here it produces 160 HP and 183 lb-ft (247 Nm) of torque. The battery-electric 500e makes use of a 111 HP electric motor and a 24kWh battery pack, offering an EPA-certified driving range of 84 miles on a full charge.

For 2020, the 500X is getting a new black roof option, while the 124 Spider can be specified with a new “Scorpion Sting” side-stripe and hood decal set. The 2020 500L continues unchanged.

But that’s not the end for the Italian retro city car as Fiat has been working on a new generation 500, which will feature an electric powertrain and bring back the Giardiniera wagon bodystyle as well. Whether the next 500 will make it on this side of the Atlantic, however, remains to be seen.
